Engineered Wood
Engineered wood is a great option to update your floor and looks almost like solid hardwood. It has dimensional strength, unlike solid wood, and comes in different variations of colors and styles. It isn't the cheapest option but still can be affordable. Engineered hardwood is also a sustainable option—both for your home and the environment around it.
Can it be refinished?
Yes! It has a small veneer layer of wood on top of layers of plywood that can be refinished once or twice. If you are wanting to refinish you want 3-6mm on that layer to give you more time to refinish.
Advantages
The layers of plywood underneath it makes it stable enough to deal with different temperatures and has strength against warping with a good substrate. It also makes it less susceptible to moisture which makes it a great option for more rooms than solid wood. It can be used in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, or other rooms that might have moisture. When it comes to the look of it, it can be prefinished or unfinished. But also can be made into wider and longer planks, giving you different options on the style. Because of the way its made it helps to conserve natural resources. When we install the floor we have the option to staple, nail, float, or glue it down.
Disadvantages
Having only a small wear layer on top, it can only be refinished a couple of times. Compared to solid wood it has less variety of color species because it only has that thin layer on top. Finding good quality engineered wood is key because if it has bad construction of the plywood it can make for warping and planks coming up. It requires more upkeep and good maintenance
